Dear Wedgwood Community:

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Chris Cronas as the interim principal of Wedgwood Elementary School, effective immediately. After reviewing characteristics provided by the school community, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Susan Enfield and I believe that Mr. Cronas’ recent administrative experience in Seattle Public Schools and his background as a classroom teacher, instructional coach and assistant middle school principal qualifies him to be an excellent interim principal choice for Wedgwood Elementary School. His student-centered approach means that he works for the success of all students at every level; he exhibits personal integrity and an ability to foster positive change.

Mr. Cronas’ appointment will ensure continuity of Wedgwood’s current programs. He is currently the assistant principal at Nathan Eckstein Middle School, a position he has held for the past two years. This role has provided him an opportunity to gain experience as an instructional leader in a school setting comparable to Wedgwood, with Spectrum and special education programs. His responsibilities included supervising and evaluating staff, leading professional development workshops in the areas of curriculum, assessment and instruction, and overseeing the humanities department and its implementation of Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop. Additionally, he worked with staff and community partners including the PTSA, Community Learning Center, and Building Leadership Team facilitating budget and grant development and providing student advocacy and support.

Mr. Cronas’ work demonstrates his commitment to collaborative decision-making through a clear and effective communication process that solicits input from appropriate stakeholders. He values relationships with staff, students, families, and community, and is committed to ensuring academic success for all students.

Prior to his assistant principal role, Mr. Cronas was a house administrator, an instruction and curriculum coach, and taught overseas in Japan for four years. He is fluent in Japanese. His professional preparation includes a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and English Education from Ithaca College and Master of Education from the Danforth Educational Leadership Program at the University of Washington.

We want to again take this opportunity to thank Denise Espania for her outstanding educational leadership. Her dedication to providing the best possible education for every child has been a gift to the Wedgwood school community. We wish her all the best in her new role as assistant principal at Nathan Eckstein Middle School.

Sincerely,

Register at eScrip

Hello New Wedgwood Families,

I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!

All of you should have received a welcome packet from the school that included a letter from the PTA/school Principal, a letter with initial information regarding new school hours, and supply lists for each classroom. If you did not, I am happy to say that all of this information is now posted here:

Letter from the PTA/Principal

New school hours & other info

Supply lists for all grades

As noted in that packet, the PTA is organizing two summer play dates for all incoming students and families. This is a great way to meet new families and for kids to make friends before school starts.

Creating a network within each classroom is great for you, as parents, since it allows you to be connected in the classroom, even if you can't physically be there on a regular basis, while also connecting you with the school. As a community, the earlier we can start to build the school year's new relationships between parents, and parents and teachers, the better.

Play dates are scheduled for:

>July 18th at Dahl field, 7700 25th Ave NE from 1 to 3 pm
>August 22nd at Dahl field, 7700 25th Ave NE from 1 to 3 pm

We can meet near the wading pool. Volunteers will be on hand with popsicles (if the summer ever gets here!) and name tags so that you can meet other families.

If you can not make one of those play dates school year then don't miss the Back to School BBQ on the Wedgwood playground and Kindergarten Open House, both on Tuesday, Sept. 7. And please be sure to attend the PTA General Membership meeting on September 23rd to join the PTA and let your voice be heard as we approve our budget, standing rules, and get volunteers for a nominating committee who will identify potential board members for next year.

Lastly, so that we may get a head start on our school roster and associated mailing lists if you would like to provide an email contact you may forward it to me at pta@wedgwoodelementary.org and include the text 'mailing list' in the subject so I can attend to your message appropriately.

Although our first PTA membership meeting is not until the end of September, please indicate if you will JOIN IN!

Dear New Wedgwood Families,

Welcome to Wedgwood Elementary. It is an outstanding community of children, parents, teachers, and staff. At the core of Wedgwood Elementary is its focus on diversity and educating tomorrow's community and world leaders. Students in general education, special education, and Spectrum learn and play together. In addition to reading, writing, and math, there is a great physical education program, music program, and art classes. We also offer on-site before- and after-school childcare and enrichment programs provided by Kid's Time (operated by Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center).

We have an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) that organizes a number of events and fundraisers supported by strong parent volunteer support in and out of the classroom.

In preparation for next year, the PTA is planning on some summer play dates for the incoming new families and is also considering placing all incoming parents and students with a 'buddy' to help answer questions and find their way around Wedgwood school and community. The first step, however, is to confirm that you would be interested in hearing from the PTA and willing for them to contact you using the information that you provided to Seattle Public Schools.

If you do not wish for your contact information to be used by the PTA to contact you regarding upcoming summer or school events, please contact Joann Sparks at 206-252-5670 or by email at josparks@seattleschools.org ASAP. We are also working on updating our web site to be consistent with other sites throughout the district. If possible we will post summer events on our site soon.

Again, welcome to Wedgwood Elementary. We look forward to having you as part of our community.

Dear Wedgwood Families:

The staff of Wedgwood Elementary would like to thank you all for helping to make this another successful year at our school. As we start Summer Break, there are several pieces of information to pass on to you that will help us all prepare for the coming year:

Please indicate in writing to the school office if your child will not be returning to Wedgwood Elementary next fall. With the changes in student assignments for the coming year, it will be most helpful to prospective parents if we know as soon as possible if your student is not returning.

Our school hours for next year will be changing slightly. The first bell will ring at 9:05 with the tardy bell ringing at 9:10. Students will be expected to be in their seats and ready for class to begin at 9:10 am. School will be dismissed at 3:15 pm.

The 2010 - 2011 school year will start Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Class lists will be posted on the front doors on Thursday, September 2 after 3:00 pm.

Please have your students check the Lost and Found. All items not claimed will be donated to charity the day after school is out.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will again take place all day Monday through Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Thursday (Thanksgiving) and Friday remain non-school days. Therefore, please plan on your child not attending school the week of November 22, 2010.

Other dates to mark on your calendar for the coming school year include the Back to School BBQ on the Wedgwood playground and the Kindergarten Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 7th at 5 pm; Kindergarten Curriculum Night on Sept 16th; 1st through 5th Curriculum Night on Sept 23 and School Pictures on Oct. 7th.

As most of you know, we have several staff members leaving Wedgwood. Teachers Susan Schroeter-Stokes, Mary LaPlante and Carla Becker will be leaving us, along with Special Ed IA Cate Johnson, our counselor, Lily Amar-Strugo, and, as we just found out, our Principal Denise Espania.
