Note that during the first couple of weeks of school, it will take a little longer to pick up your student. Thank you in advance for your flexibility and patience.

Back to School BBQ

This is an annual kick-off to the school year. Excited kids get to meet, parents and staff get to greet, and everyone gets to eat!

Kindergarten rooms will be open the first 30 minutes to allow parents to see the rooms and drop-off supplies. Kindergarten rooms will close at 5:30 pm. Please note that other than Kindergarten rooms, the school building will be closed to families as teachers are finalizing preparations for the first day of school.

In addition, we will have information available about volunteer opportunities, after school programs (enrichment and child care options), and our Parent Buddy Program.

Volunteer Opportunities

We rely heavily on our parent volunteers at Wedgwood, and are very fortunate to have such a fantastic group of people willing to give their time and skills to the school. We want to make sure that everyone finds the right volunteer opportunities for their particular family and schedule, and we will have our PTA Volunteer Chairs, Heather Pruehs and Betsy Turnbull, available at the BBQ to chat with you about those options. There will be sign-up sheets for events and other volunteer needs, and a preliminary PTA event calendar for you to use in planning out where you might fit in to the volunteer needs for the coming year. Stay tuned for more information to come on volunteer opportunities, and do not hesitate to contact Heather or Betsy to talk about how you can best serve as a volunteer at Wedgwood.

After School Programs

This year we are continuing our partnership with Ravenna-Eckstein Community Center in offering our after school programs. We hope that the program offerings are going to be available by August 23rd, and we will post that information on the website when it becomes available. Representatives from Ravenna-Eckstein will be at the BBQ, and can provide information on Kids Time child care options, as well as the class offerings for after school.

Parent Buddy Program

This year we are again offering our Parent Buddy Program for families who are new to Wedgwood. Erica Goos has already been busy this summer matching new Wedgwood parents with those of us who have been around for a while. Parent buddies are volunteers who agree to be the point person for one of our new families as they integrate into our community. They are available to answer questions and provide a more personalized introduction to the school. If you are new to Wedgwood, we hope that you will sign up to be matched with a parent buddy volunteer. If you are a returning family, we hope you will volunteer to serve as a parent buddy and help our new parents join our community. We will have sign ups and information about the parent buddy program available at the BBQ. If you are interested in signing up you may also contact parent Erica Goos at e_goos@hotmail.com.

Thank you for your support.

Introducing Our New Website!

Our school has a new website and web address. Please have a look! http://wedgwoodes.seattleschools.org/

Seattle Public Schools is implementing a new platform for hosting and managing our website, with the goal of aligning websites across the district. The new platform provides online tools to increase family engagement and student learning and creates equitable access to these tools for all our schools. It will also increase our ability to provide accurate and timely information through web tools that are easier to use and require less time to maintain.

The next few weeks will be a time of transition – the old site will remain up and functioning, and we encourage you to bookmark, visit, and start using the new site. In due time, the old site will come down entirely, and our school will have only one, new, online presence.

Parents, the our new website has new capabilities for connecting with your students’ classes and teachers. These will become fully functional in the next few months, but please have a look at the attached documents see below) to learn how to log in to the new site. We will be providing more information shortly about these tools and how our school plans to utilize them.

We strongly urge you to:

	1. create an account with the Source
2. subscribe to the NEW newsletter system

The newsletter is an important communication tool for the school, keeping families updated about events and issues. We will continue using the old newsletter mailing list for a short time, but will eventually transition to the new one. Please make sure you do not miss out on important news by registering ASAP. Thanks!

If you have questions or ideas for additional website content, please contact Amy Stanton at amyestanton@gmail.com.

SHOP & SUPPORT WEDGWOOD

When shopping for school supplies, please consider these generous programs:

Buy supplies at Office Depot — Mention Wedgwood Elementary every time, and they add it to a tally, giving our staff 5% of total purchases in the form of store credit to be used for supplies.

Having a Target “Red Card” also pays — Simply register your card at www.target.com/tcoe, designate Wedgwood as your school, and the “Take Charge of Education” plan will donate 1% of all card purchases year round!

Purchase Scrip (which work like gift cards) through our monthly program and shop with it — another simple way to support Wedgwood (more on this when the school year starts).

Register at eScrip — Going to www.escrip.com and designating Wedgwood is a great way to automatically give back every time you shop. Stores like Safeway and Macy’s tie their cards straight to the program, and you can shop hundreds of name brand merchants online like Eddie Bauer and Barnes & Noble. Register now!
