A Message From Your Principal - Young Authors' Week

Dear Wedgwood Families,

We have another exciting week for our community! Ms. Miller, our librarian, has planned an amazing literacy/young authors’ week! She asked a Seattle Public Librarian to come in to talk with our students about books and summer reading. In addition to this special guest, with the support of PTA funds, Ms. Miller was able to bring Book-It Theaters to do a whole school assembly as well as individual workshops for each of our classes. This amazing production of bringing stories to life and integrating reading, writing, and drama into the classroom will be an amazing experiential literacy learning experience for all. Our students will be experiencing The Jungle Books, by Rudyard Kipling, but if you want to find out more about what your children will be doing with Book-It, funded by our generous PTA, please check it out on-line at http://www.book-it.org/touring-shows.php.

We also have music concerts coming up. I sat in on a music class and was taken away by the beautiful sounds, rhythms and energy that our students produced. I know you will be just as thrilled to hear the amazing musical accomplishments your children have gained with Ms. Becker.

I have also been reflecting with the teachers on the growth that your children have accomplished. This year, we specifically have been focused on writing. The hard work of our teachers and your children, with the support of our families, has paid off and is evidenced in our children’s ability to express themselves through essays and poetry. As the year is quickly coming to a close I hope you take a moment to appreciate all the hard work that your children and their teachers have accomplished.

Science Night Thanks!

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a shoe! … Kids made some crazy contraptions to be dropped from the top of Ladder 9 as eggs fell from the sky at last week's Egg Drop. Inside school, Science Night was a blast (literally) as kids had a chance to show off their experiments and conclusions during Science Night. Even teachers and parents got into it, Mrs. Murphy and Lisa Newcomb displayed a real greenhouse to promote our special playground garden.

Thanks to Bob Bucher, Marcie Kellegrew, Laura Lindhe, Mark and Eric Copper and Aaron Grigg for their help! A HUGE thank you to Sylvia Lago for organizing this event that is a love to all, students and parents alike.

PTA Membership Meeting Update

Thanks to responsible spending and the success of the Walkathon and upcoming Carnival FUNdraisers, the PTA General Membership approved an additional $11,500 in items needed at school at their meeting before Science Night (thank you to those of you who attended). Items included new blinds and white boards for classrooms, textbooks for the new 4th grade classroom next year, and books for the Professional Development Library.

The 2009-10 PTA Board was also voted in—congrats all around! 2009-10 PTA Board:

Looking for Students in the Spotlight

Parents, did your child win an award or receive recognition for an extracurricular activity outside of school and would like to share with us? Our student teachers will be creating a Student Achievement Board to celebrate all that our children have accomplished this year, and would love to include your child.

Email joyang@seattleschools.org or send via kidmail, a picture and a short 2-3 sentence summary of what the award was about.

PLEASE RESPOND BY FRIDAY, JUNE 5.
